Roy Beck identifies donor damage and complications increase DMEK cell loss

What factors influence corneal graft health after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK)? A new secondary analysis from the Diabetes Endothelial Keratoplasty Study (DEKS), coauthored by GCDTRs Roy Beck found that greater endothelial cell loss at one year was associated with: Donor endothelial cell damage after lenticule preparation Intraoperative complications Recipient indications other than Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) The findings also show that assessing donor endothelial cell damage with trypan blue staining provides valuable information beyond preoperative endothelial cell density, helping improve donor tissue evaluation and potentially optimize DMEK outcomes.
