Automated insulin delivery improves outcomes for adults with type 2 diabetes

A recent study coauthored by GCDTR’s Roy Beck Jaeb Center for Health Research shows that automated insulin delivery (AID) works for all adults with insulin-treated type 2 diabetes. The 2IQP randomized controlled trial evaluated Control-IQ+ technology in 319 adults and revealed consistent glycemic benefits across diverse patient populations.

Key findings:

  1. AID users achieved a 0.9% HbA1c reduction compared to 0.3% in the control group, with participants having the highest baseline HbA1c experiencing the greatest improvement (2.3% reduction).
  2. Time in range improved by 14% with AID compared to continuous glucose monitoring alone, demonstrating significant hyperglycemia management benefits.
  3. Success was independent of prior insulin pump experience, carbohydrate counting knowledge, age, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, indicating AID should be considered for all adults with insulintreated type 2 diabetes.

These results suggest that automated insulin delivery technology can democratize diabetescare and improve outcomes across diverse patient populations. BALTIMORE VA MEDICAL CENTER Tandem Diabetes Care Emory Global Diabetes Research Center Jim Curran James R.
