AID improves type 2 diabetes control, says Beck Jaeb Center

A recent Diabetes Care study co-authored by GCDTR’s Roy W. Beck JaebCenter shows that Automated Insulin Delivery offers significant benefits for many insulin-treated type 2 diabetes patients, including those on current medications and GLP-1 RAs. Key findings: HbA1c reduction: −0.8% from a baseline of 8.0%, a 0.5% greater drop vs CGM + standard insulin (−0.8% vs −0.3%).

Time-in-range (70–180 mg/dL): Increased by ~15 percentage points with AID compared with minimal change in the CGM group. Hyperglycemia metrics: Significant improvements in mean glucose, time >180 mg/dL, and time >250 mg/dL with AID. Insulin use: ~8 units/day less total daily insulin with AID, despite better glycemic control.

Weight: No significant weight gain in GLP-1 RA users with AID, in contrast to weight gain seen in non–GLP-1 RA users. Safety: Hypoglycemia remained very low and did not increase with AID. Even in adults already on contemporary, guideline-directed therapy (GLP-1 RA + insulin), layering Control-IQ + AID delivers meaningful, safe improvements in glycemic control, with reduced insulin requirements and stable weight, highlighting a powerful technology, pharmacology combination for type 2 diabetes management.
