A new study coauthored by GCDTR’s Thayer I. found that with improvements in care and rising adult-onset diagnoses, the number of older adults living with type 1 diabetes is steadily increasing. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence to guide clinicians and health systems in delivering effective, age-appropriate care for this often-overlooked population.
Key insights: • Older adults with T1D have distinct clinical and self-management challenges. • Differentiating T1D from insulin-treated type 2 diabetes in older age can be difficult but is essential for appropriate care. • Greater clinician awareness and tailored care models are needed to reduce risks such as hypoglycemia and treatment burden.
